Welcome to Clare County Michigan! Clare County is located northeast of the middle of the Lower Penninsula. Civil War veteran William Crawford started Grant Township and Dover, the first permenant community to settle here. The 1850’s and 60’s were subject to rapid growth due to strategic lumber floating position and huge white pine forests. Such growth created lawlessness in local government and lumber camps resulting in the citizens burning down the Farwell Courthouse in 1877. |
| Farwell - Farwell is found on the southern border of Clare County. Named after Samuel Farwell in 1870 for his strong interest & family ties in building railroads.
Harrison - originally a successful lumber community is located in the middle of Clare county. Relax at Wilson State Park with an awesome view of Budd Lake or visit the Clare County Fair every August and the Morel Mushroom Festival held in May. |

Organized in 1840, the county was originally named “Kaykee” after Chippewa Indian Chief Pigeon Hawk. The county was later renamed in 1843 by Irish immigrants after a county in their homeland.
